Writing Tips and Tricks by Lois Shuart

We stand at the end of a year. Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, this can be a good time of reflection. Celebrate with joy and, if you are older like I am, celebrate with memories. If you have always wanted to write, then celebrate by writing down how you celebrate. What traditions made you unique? What mystical things happened in your childhood? If you are a young person, you are not too young to write, or you wouldn’t be reading this. Everyone has a perspective or a point of view.

If you have memories, or if you are just now taking notes on life, write them down, because you are unique in what you do, in who you are, and where you are from.

If anyone tells you that you are too old to write or too young to write, ignore them! Make a journal, fill a notebook, take pictures, use a diary, or make a video, and then make the best story that you can from the pieces of the puzzle that you have.

Make people relate; make them cry, make them laugh, make them think, or make them wonder. All of it can make a good story. Could it be published this year? Probably not, but there is nothing wrong with next year, and you will be ahead of the game. In closing, the trick is to write it down so it is not lost to you. The tip is to make a story that people will enjoy, edit it, and submit it at an appropriate time of year. “Write what you know!”
